Jackson has very carefully chosen very specific excerpts from the interviews, by not shying away from tackling the harsh aspects from before and after the war.
The footage has been split up into three acts: one being before the front line, the second is the front line and the third being aftermath. Jackson very carefully bookmarks the whole documentary with sections of black and white footage, while he adds the color to the heart of it.
Then coming to the central, long section of color footage, has got many drawn images interspersed between them which help in making more gruesome moments become slightly more palatable.
Despite all this, the main horror of the event was shown in full when you will see decaying bodies close, along with the examples of the trench foot, also get to see the true grimness in color, and horrific injuries which make the viewer feel of how the full experience happened.
This is a movie which will fill you with an intensified version of all the old feelings: which mostly would turn out to be the rage at the incompetence and cruelty of a governing class which puts these soldiers through hell in their mechanization and normalization of war.
While the movie could have done even without the 3D imaging, this method of creativity completely makes sense in creating the most immersive experience possible, which will possibly leave the viewers feeling as though they are hip deep in grimy water, smelling the dirt and ash from explosives which terrorize the servicemen on the front line.
To mark as an act of popular history, They Shall Not Grow Old is undoubtedly an outstanding movie.
